1933 R337 Eclipse Import #402 Babe Ruth - SGC EX 60 - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,113
Graded EX 60 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC or PSA! In fact, the next highest graded 1933 R337 Eclipse Import #402 Babe Ruth by either SGC or PSA is a VG example. Extremely attractive R337 Eclipse Import card featuring a crisp image of Babe Ruth, with four square corners, and a slight irregular cut across the bottom. The reverse is perfectly clean. This is the key card from one of the most unusual and scarce "R" card issues of the early 1930s. R337s were issued in eight-card strips. Each card features a primitive, in most cases barely recognizable, full-color artwork of the player on the front. For some reason, perhaps because of their rarity and the poor quality of the artwork, the set has always held a special place in the hearts of serious collectors. The Ruth card, in particular, has always been a favorite. The artwork on this card is based upon a very well known photograph of Ruth, the same photo that appears on his R317 Uncle Jack's gum card. To see these two cards together, or just an R337 and an image of the photograph upon which the R337 artwork is based, makes it hard not to be amused by the primitive quality of the set. This is one of the most distinctive and interesting of all 1930s Ruth cards, and due to its method of issue, is very rarely found in high grade. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,113
