1933 R337 Eclipse Import Complete Set (24) Including Ruth

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233

One of the most distinctive and unusual card issues of the early 1930s, R337s were issued in eight-card strips. Each card features a primitive, in some cases barely recognizable, full-color artwork of the player on the front. For some reason, perhaps a combination of their rarity and unusual artwork, the set has always held a special appeal and charm for serious collectors. There is no question that they certainly are different! They are also quite rare, far more so than standard 1930s sets such as those issued by National Chicle and Goudey. The Ruth card alone has auction records in the thousands and is something of an unlikely classic among 1930s cards. Offered is a very rarely seen complete set of all twenty-four different cards in the R337 set, the first complete set we can recall offering, highlighted by ten Hall of Famers. These cards are rarely found in high grade and as can be seen most have a superior appearance to the technical grades provided: #402 Ruth (Fr), 405 Terry (Vg), 408 Grove (Vg), 415 Simmons (Vg), 416 Manush (Gd), 419 Frisch (Fr), 420 Lazzeri (Vg/Vg-Ex), 421 P. Waner (Vg-Ex), Foxx (Gd), and Traynor (Gd). One common (Schulbe) is graded POOR 10 by SGC. The balance of the cards range in grade from Fair to Gd. Total: 24 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,233
