1935 R332 Schutter-Johnson Candy SGC-Graded Collection (17)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,175
Collection of seventeen cards (of the 50 in the set) from the 1935 Schutter-Johnson set, highlighted by nine Hall of Famers, all graded by SGC (except two PSA). This unusual set is entitled "Major League Secrets." The reverse of each card in the series features the player's sage advice on some aspect of the game, with the card's captioned illustration on the front relating to this advice. The design and very primitive illustrations of this rare issue give it a distinctive character and charm. The set was illustrated by former Major Leaguer Al Demaree, who also provided the artwork to R304 "Demaree Diecuts," and the cartoon bodies of players in the 1938 Goudey "Heads Up" series. The SGC grades are as follows: One EX 60: #9. Five VG/EX 50: #7 Hornsby, 8, 27 Goslin, 28 Combs, and 35 "Dizzy" Dean (PSA VG-EX 4). One VG 40: #13. Five GOOD 30: #3 Cuyler, 12, 18, 41 McGraw, and 44. Four FAIR 20: #4 Frisch, 16 Waner Bros., 25, and 40. One PSA PR 1: #1 Al Simmons. These cards are technically in varying grades but overall have a very strong visual appeal, with most cards appearing far better than suggested by their assigned grades. Total: 17 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
