1939 R303-B Goudey Premium Joe DiMaggio

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $705

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Extraordinary high-grade R303-B black-and-white example of one of DiMaggio's most striking and overlooked cards. Issued in 1939 by Goudey Gum, and catalogued R303-B in the American Card Catalog , this large-format (4-3/4 x 7-3/8 inches) set is printed on thin stock and was issued both in black and white, as well as sepia. This is an exceptional ultra high-grade black-and-white example of Joe DiMaggio, the key card from the set. R303s are rarely found in such high grade. PSA is very hard on these premiums. This R303 DiMaggio is a gem! We grade this card Nr/Mt. (In fact, it has a Nr/Mt-Mt appearance!) Bright and crisp, with a flawless surface, no creases, four sharp corners, and an outstanding image. The card features playing tips on the reverse. This card (submitted for grading by REA) was chosen for purchase by our consignor in the early days of conventions in the 1980s, long before the advent of professional grading, precisely due to its exceptional condition. This is an outstanding and extremely high grade example of a very early and significant DiMaggio card, and his last issued by the legendary Goudey Gum Company. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
