1939 V351 World Wide Gum Premium Collection (15) Including DiMaggio and Williams

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,700

Collection of fifteen different (of the 25 in the set) 1939 V351 World Wide Gum premiums, highlighted by all four Hall of Famers in the set, including key cards Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. These Canadian Goudey premiums, issued in 1939, are among the rarest of all 1930s gum issues. Catalogued V351, this set is so rare that most collectors, even 1930s gum-card collectors, are unfamiliar with them. At a glance, they are easily mistaken for R303 Goudey premiums. Although closely related to the American Goudey R303 premium issue, V351 World Wide Gum premiums are substantially smaller than their American counterparts, measuring only 4 x 5-5/8 inches. As with R303, each card features playing tips on the reverse. The collection consists of the following: Arnovich (Vg), Bell (Vg), Caldwell (Vg), Danning (Vg), Dean (HOF, Vg), Derringer (Vg), DiMaggio (HOF, Vg-Ex), Gehringer (HOF, Vg-Ex), Hasson (Vg), Marchildon (Vg), Meola (Vg-Ex), Moser (Vg), Pytlak (Vg), Rogers (Vg), Williams (HOF, Ex). This is a tremendous collection of these rare premiums, clean and crisp across the board, and it should be stressed that all have an Excellent or better appearance (and have been downgraded for extremely minor flaws that are not immediately obvious, perhaps a tiny crease or a hint of corner wear). This is a great-looking group! These premiums have received relatively little attention from collectors compared to traditional gum cards of the era (in part because only in very recent years have the grading companies designed holders for cards of this size), and a case can easily be made that they represent one of the best values of all rare 1930s baseball gum card issues. Also included are two R303 Goudey (A/B) premiums of Bill Dickey (both Nr/Mt). Total: 17 cards (fifteen V351s and two R303s). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $4,700
