1939-1946 Salutation Exhibits Near-Complete Set (73 of 83)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,175
Collection of seventy-three different (of the 83 cards in the set as checklisted in The Standard Catalog ) plus four variations and eighteen duplicates (for a total of ninety-five cards) from the 1939-1946 Salutation Exhibits set. This near-set is highlighted by many rarities including the Ted Williams (#9 on back) variation. These unnumbered cards are not dated and were issued over a series of years, so they are generally collected as a single set. Some cards in this Exhibit-card series were issued for numerous years, while other players were issued for only a short period of time, thus creating many rarities. Because they have the player's signature and a "salutation" scripted at the bottom, they are often referred to as "Salutation Exhibits." The rarities in this set make the assembly of a complete set one of the most difficult of all Exhibit card sets. While not quite complete, this is a very advanced collection, missing just ten cards. (The ten missing cards are Averill, Cuccinello, Dean, Gehrig, Gomez, Grove, Hartnett, Lombardi/Cordially, May, and Rizzo.) The cards in this collection are extremely bright, fresh, and attractive. Condition ranges from Good to Ex-Mt (with some better). Most have been downgraded for writing (pencil) or stamp hinge mark on the back, and otherwise appear Ex. Keys: DiMaggio (Ex), Feller/port. (Vg), Foxx (Ex-Mt), Gehringer (Ex), Greenberg/Very truly yours (Vg/Vg-Ex), Holmes/Sincerely yours (Gd-Vg), Klein (Ex), Kreevich (Ex), Mulcahy (price "2.00" written in pencil on back, otherwise Ex), Newson (Ex-Mt), Russell (scrapbook removal on back, otherwise Nr/Mt), and Williams/#9 shows (Ex). This rare near-set is part of an extraordinary comprehensive Exhibit-card collection, assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced pioneer collector, that is being offered in a number of smaller lots (mostly by year) in this auction. This is a very attractive, overall high-grade rarely seen near-set of this classic Exhibit Supply Company issue. Total: 95 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,175
