1948 Rare Leaf PSA-Graded Collection Including Feller, Kell, and Doby (22)
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $15,275
Extremely substantial collection of twenty-two "Rare Leafs" from this classic set, highlighted by key "Rare Leaf" Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Larry Doby, and George Kell, as well as several key non-HOFer stars, each graded and encapsulated EX-MT 6 (sixteen) or EX 5 (six) by PSA: Sixteen EX-MT 6: #5 Trucks, 13 Michaels, 43 Stevens, 51 Dark, 66 Grove, 93 Feller (HOF), 104 Stewart, 120 Kell RC (HOF), 129 Higbe, 138 Doby RC (HOF), 142 Murtaugh, 153 Baker, 158 Brecheen, 160 Scheffing, 163 Hutchinson, and 168 Cavaretta. Six EX 5: #45 Keltner, 68 Miller, 75 D. DiMaggio, 131 Gordon, 149 Majeski, and 161 Stephens. The first color baseball cards of the post-World War II era were produced by Chicago's Leaf Gum Company in 1948. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Leafs are without question one of the toughest postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. This is an extremely attractive group comprised exclusively of short prints, including three Hall of Famers (out of only six "Rare Leaf" Hall of Famers in the set), which could serve as significant additions to or upgrades for a world-class set. The SMR value for the assigned grades is $11,940. Total: 22 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000+. SOLD FOR $15,275
