1948-1949 Leaf PSA-Graded Complete Standard Set (49)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $23,500
Stunning ultra high-grade complete 49-card "standard" set of 1948-1949 Leaf Baseball cards, one of the finest ever assembled, highlighted by fourteen Hall of Famers, including Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial's rookie card, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson's rookie card, Warren Spahn's rookie card, and Honus Wagner. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set includes twenty-eight NM-MT 8s, nineteen NM 7s, and two EX-MT 6s. A set like this does not just happen to come together by chance, especially for Leaf baseball. This ultra high-grade set has been assembled one card at a time with an uncompromising commitment to condition and eye-appeal over many years by an extremely dedicated collector who actively sought to upgrade this set at considerable expense during the entire span of his collecting. This is an extraordinary set! The PSA grades are as follows: Twenty-eight NM-MT 8: #17, 26, 31, 32 Spahn RC (HOF), 46 Mize (HOF), 47, 49, 50, 53 Vandermeer, 56, 57, 59 Appling (HOF), 61, 65, 70 Wagner (HOF), 73, 77, 82, 83 Doerr (HOF), 91 Kiner RC (HOF), 95, 97, 106 Boudreau (HOF), 111, 117 Gordon (HOF), 128, 136 Aberson (full sleeve), and 139. Nineteen NM 7: #4 Musial RC (HOF), 10, 11 Rizzuto RC (HOF), 14, 22, 27, 28, 29, 38 Kluszewski, 39, 42, 72, 76 Williams (HOF), 79 Robinson RC (HOF), 84, 86, 102 Hermanski (correct), 125, and 159. Two EX-MT 6: #1 DiMaggio (HOF) and 3 Ruth (HOF). Chicago's Leaf Gum Company produced the first multicolor baseball cards of the post-World War II era in 1948-1949. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Leafs are without question one of the toughest postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. The unusual and striking design, the exotic colors, the unusual poses, and the many great stars included all combine to make the 1948-1949 Leaf set one of the most enduring and popular of all baseball-card issues. This is an outstanding high-grade "standard" set with many significant highlights, including particularly attractive examples of key cards such as Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Warren Spahn. The Honus Wagner card in the 1948 Leaf set has always been a favorite with collectors as he is pictured with chewing tobacco. This is a world-class set, literally one of the finest sets in existence, of one of postwar-card collecting's greatest classics. The SMR value for the group is $23,335. Total: 49 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000++. SOLD FOR $23,500
