1949-1950 Toleteros Leon Day
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,763
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Extremely rare 1949-1950 Toleteros card of Hall of Famer Leon Day. The Toleteros sets feature players from the Puerto Rican Winter League from 1948 to 1951, and are particularly significant as they feature many players who appear in few or no other card sets. Included are many Negro League stars, as well as many Major Leaguers who played in the Puerto Rican Winter League during the off-season. This card represents one of the very few contemporary cards ever issued of legendary Hall of Famer Leon Day. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995. The card is very harshly graded by SGC at VG 40, and in fact appears to be in Excellent condition with just the lightest hint of corner wear. Extremely close examination reveals hints of very light surface cracking along the borders of the card which is the sole reason for the downgrade. Bright, fresh, and perfectly clean, it is otherwise in strong Excellent condition. The reverse is clean with bold red print. A very attractive technically medium-grade example of this extremely rare issue featuring one of the all-time great Negro League Hall of Famers. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,763
