1889 N526 Number 7 Cigar Complete Set (15): #1 PSA Set Registry!
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $7,638
Presented is complete set of fifteen exceedingly rare 1889 Number 7 Cigar cards, each graded and encapsulated by PSA. This is the first complete set of Number 7 Cigar cards we have ever offered. 1889 Number 7 Cigars are one of the rarest and most unusual nineteenth-century tobacco trade-card sets. This fifteen-card set was issued in 1889 and features portrait line drawings of members of the Boston Nationals including Hall of Famers Mike "King" Kelly, Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn, and Dan Brouthers. The cards were issued in several variations which relate to the advertising on the cards. The back of the cards feature ads for either Diamond S Cigars or Number 7 Cigars. Cards with “C.S. White & Co.” stamped at the top are also known. C.S. White & Co. was very likely a tobacco shop that distributed the cards. All cards from this issue have long been referred to as “Number 7 Cigars” as almost all cards known feature advertising on the reverse for that brand of tobacco. These unusual large cards, which each measure 2.25 x 4 inches, are incredibly rare and are not often seen in any condition. This extremely clean set of fifteen cards includes six "Number 7 Cigars" ad back cards and nine very rare "Diamond S Cigar" back card. The PSA grades are as follows: One EX-MT 6: Madden. Four EX 5: Brown (rare Diamond S ad on back and C.S. White & Co. stamp on front), John Clarkson (HOF, rare Diamond S ad on back and C.S. White & Co. stamp on front), Mike "King" Kelly (HOF, rare Diamond S ad on back and C.S. White & Co. stamp on front), and Quinn (rare Diamond S ad on back and C.S. White & Co. stamp on front). One VG-EX 4: Richardson (rare Diamond S ad on back and C.S. White & Co. stamp on front). Three VG 3: Bennett, Ganzel (rare Diamond S ad on back), and Hart (rare Diamond S ad on back and C.S. White & Co. stamp on front). One GOOD+ 2.5: Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn (HOF). Three GOOD 2: Dennis Brouthers (HOF), Nash, and Sowders (rare Diamond S ad on back). One FR 1.5: Johnston (rare Diamond S ad on back) . One Authentic: Ray (all four borders trimmed off). This is an extremely attractive set. This stunning set represents a possibly unique opportunity to acquire the complete set of fifteen cards from this distinctive, fascinating, and rare nineteenth-century issue. Total: 15 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,638
