1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Kid Nichols - PSA NM-MT 8
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $16,450
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Extraordinary ultra high-grade example of Hall of Famer Kid Nichols from the 1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug set. It is rare to find any nineteenth-century card in such pristine condition, let alone a key Hall of Famer! This is all the more the case when dealing with the condition-sensitive N300 Mayo's Cut Plug set. This is the highest grade EVER by PSA for an N300 Mayo's Cut Plug card of ANY player. (This is one of two Mayos graded NM-MT 8: Only one other N300 example of a different player, for a total of only two cards out of 291 Mayo's in total graded to date, have graded NM-MT 8, with none higher.) This is an outstanding high-grade card. Perfectly clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners, flawless contrast, and perfect borders. The card is centered just a hint to the left with a very slight natural diamond cut. The reverse is perfectly clean with only the slightest hint of white showing along the extreme edges. This is a miracle card! It would be hard to imagine a finer example. In addition to being a key Hall of Famer in the set, this is also a fascinating card since it was issued several years after Nichols finished the 1889 season with Omaha, and signed with Boston in 1890. There were not yet any photographs of Nichols in a Boston uniform available, so Mayo took a photo of Nichols in his Omaha uniform and had the art department add "Boston" onto his uniform. Upon very close examination of the image this is easily seen. This is a magnificent ultra high-grade example, literally the finest in the universe, of one of Nichols' most impressive cards, and one of the most desirable Hall of Famers in the Mayo's series. SMR value is $29,000. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $16,450
