1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Buck Ewing - Cleveland - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,400

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Highest-graded example by far! The next-highest grade for this card by SGC or PSA is EX 60 and EX 5, respectively. Magnificent high-grade N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Famer Buck Ewing. There are two team variations of Ewing in the Mayo set. This is the earlier-issued "Cleveland" variation. Ewing was with Cleveland in 1894 and his Mayo card was first issued with "Cleveland" on his shirt. This was later changed to "Cincinnati" when he joined the Reds for the 1895 season. It is also interesting to note that the Ewing with Cleveland version is considerably rarer than the Cincinnati variety, suggesting that the team change was executed very early in the production of the Mayo set. Bright and crisp, with a bold portrait, no creases, and with only the slightest hint of wear to the extremely condition-sensitive edges and corners. The front and back are extremely clean. The Mayo set includes many of the most striking portrait cards of many very significant nineteenth-century players. By far the finest we (or PSA or SGC) have ever seen and very likely literally the finest in existence. This is an stunning high-grade example of one of the most important and rare cards in the Mayo set and one of Buck Ewing’s most classic cards. The equivalent SMR value is $14,500. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
