1961 Bazooka Panel #1-3 Mickey Mantle Progressive Proofs (7)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,293
1961 Bazooka color-process proofs and one final process card, each featuring Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle, the key card from the 1961 Bazooka set, with Art Mahaffey and Ron Santo on either side, presented in seven individual three-card panels. The extremely rare color-progression proof panels were intended for use by the printer and Bazooka to help check and correct colors prior to printing production quantities. They are very likely unique. The proof panels have, respectively 1) yellow printing; 2) red printing; 3) blue printing; 4) red and yellow printing; 5) black printing; and 6) red, yellow, and blue printing, giving it the appearance of a final process panel but the black printing is missing. Each of these color combinations represents a step toward the final process with all colors including black. The panels are in outstanding Near Mint condition. The cards on the panels are in spectacular Nr/Mt-Mt condition. The final process panel is flawlessly cut from a box (as opposed to the color processes proofs, which are flawlessly cut from proof sheets), with the dotted lines clearly showing all the way around with room to spare; a tiny stain to the right of Mantle's name has little or no impact on the final panel's otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt appearance. 1961 was the third year of production of Bazooka baseball cards, and the second year Bazooka issued cards in the three-card panel format. This set of Bazooka color-process panels was consigned by an extremely advanced old-time collector who for years specialized in extremely rare and desirable Mantle items and saved these panels as favorites from his most active collecting days in the 1970s and 1980s (along with several other items including the 1954 Stahl-Meyer Mantle and magnificent signed 1952 Topps #311 Mantle that also appear in this auction). These panels are spectacular, and are very likely unique, and all the more noteworthy as they date from the year of Mantle's historic 1961 season. Total: 7 panels. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
