1963 Pepsi-Cola Houston Colt .45's Collection (41) Including a Complete Set with Bateman!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,463
Gorgeous high-grade collection of forty-one cards (complete set of 16 plus 25 duplicates), highlighted by the legendary rarity John Bateman card, from this very rare and unusual early 1960s Texas-area regional issue. This collection was consigned by the family of a longtime Texas collector who is now long deceased. When the collection of 1963 Pepsi-Cola cards arrived, we were shocked to find Bateman in the collection. The 1963 Pepsi-Cola Bateman has long been recognized as one of the great regional rarities of the era. We would be surprised if more than five examples are even known to exist. In the 1970s, the Bateman card had a much higher profile than in today's collecting world. In fact, in the early days in the organized hobby, Bateman was spoken of with the same reverence as Wagner, Plank, Magie, and other legendary rarities. Its higher profile in the 1970s and 1980s is probably the result of regionals in general having a higher profile years ago. We think the advent of professional grading had a big impact on the collecting popularity of some of these regional issues, as most were sold packaged with food and are therefore rarely found in high grade. The Bateman card is just as rare as ever. This is the first example we have ever offered at auction. The 1963 Pepsi-Cola cards in this lot were almost certainly saved in the year of issue and have not seen the light of day since. These unusual cards (2-3/8 x 9-1/8 inches) feature only players of the Houston Colt .45's and were designed to be issued one card per old-fashioned six-pack cardboard container of Pepsi-Cola. All the cards are with tabs (except Bateman). This is a sharp-looking group! Forty cards range from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt (averaging Nr/Mt), and one is lesser (Bateman, tab cut, otherwise Ex). The collection is comprised of the following (quantities in parentheses): Aspromonte (3), Bateman/short print (no tab), Bruce, Campbell (3), Farrell (3), Fazio (3), Hardy (3), Hartman (4), Johnson (2), Lillis/short print, McMahon (3), Runnels (3), Spangler (3), Staub (3), Temple (4), and Warwick/short print. The inclusion of Bateman, the amazing condition (for Pepsi-Colas these are very high grade), and the number of cards in this lot combine to make this an extraordinary collection of 1963 Pepsi-Cola cards. The lot is accompanied by an August 31, 1976, edition of the Sports Collectors Digest which features the rare Bateman card (a different example) on its cover (contributed from REA's library). Total: 41 cards (complete set of 16 plus 25 duplicates). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $6,463
