1889 N172 Old Judge Ed Delahanty - Rookie Card!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,666
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Very pleasing N172 example of Ed Delahanty (pose #123-3 - hands at waist, 2d B., Phila), one of the rarest of all Old Judge Hall of Famers. All six poses of Ed Delahanty in Old Judge were issued only in 1889, a particularly scarce year compared to 1887 and 1888, no doubt contributing to Delahanty's significant rarity. While this card features Delahanty with the Philadelphia Nationals in his second year in the majors, it is the first of his few baseball cards ever issued, and as such is recognized as Delahanty's rookie card. This card has evenly rounded corners and a very light surface crease along the bottom. The image is a little light, which is a common trait with N172s. There are two purple ink stamps with the name of the original owner ("George H. Mayer") and blue ink lines on the reverse (which impacts the technical grade but not the desirability to most collectors as this "comes with the territory" with Old Judges). A very attractive low-grade example of one of the key nineteenth-century and Old Judge Hall of Famer rarities. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666
