1912 Chicago Cubs West Side Park Panorama

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,185

This beautiful panorama is actually a huge novelty postcard! This extremely rare "jumbo" panoramic postcard captures a game-in-progress scene at Chicago's West Side Park in 1912. Taken from the perspective of the center field bleachers, the photo encompasses the entire playing field, grandstand, a portion of the scoreboard, and a number of outlying buildings. The Cubs, dressed in their home whites, are in the field, and the stands are filled to capacity, with an overflow of fans seen sitting in the outfield. Given the size of the crowd, it is possibly that this photo captures the action on opening day. The photographer's copyright information "1912 by Max Rigot" appears twice, once in white lettering near the base, and again in black lettering along the top right border. Rigot produced a number of standard-size Chicago Cubs and White Sox baseball postcards during the early 1900s, but his panoramic examples are exceedingly rare today. This is the first example of this particular panoramic image we have ever seen, let alone handled, and it comes with local flavor. According to our consignor, this piece hung for decades in a Chicago barber shop. Having admired it as kid every time he went for a hair cut, he finally came to own it in 1978 when he purchased it from his barber's widow shortly after the gentleman's death. It has remained in his collection since that time. The postcard 24 x 5 inches displays a few insignificant surface blemishes and is in apparent Excellent condition. Beautifully matted and framed to total dimensions of 28 x 9.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,185
