1913 St. Mary's Industrial School For Boys Calendar (Babe Ruth's Final Year At St. Mary's!)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $593
Rare, heretofore never before seen 1913 wall calendar issued by St. Mary's Industrial School For Boys in Baltimore, Maryland. The top half of the calendar (9 x 11 inches) features a photo of the interior of a chapel, below which is printed "Chapel Station D, Baltimore, MD." The bottom half displays a twelve-page "tear-away" calendar (5.25 x 4.25 inches) for the year 1913. Text to both the left and right of the calendar advertises for the calendar producer's printing services: "Book, Job and Newspaper Printing in all Its Branches C. & P. Phone Gilmor 2357 - Work Called For And Delivered Estimates Cheerfully Given Good Work Guaranteed Give Us A Trial." The significance of this calendar, of course, is that it was issued during the time Babe Ruth attended St. Mary's. In fact, it is from his final year at St. Mary's, the very year during which he was at his best and most mature as a ballplayer for the school. Ruth's trade at St. Mary's was tailoring, but by 1913 it was clear that his most marketable skill was throwing and hitting a baseball. One year later, at the age of nineteen, Ruth left St. Mary's for good after signing a professional baseball contract with Jack Dunn's Baltimore Orioles. A year later he was with the Red Sox and the rest, as they say, is history. Any and all material relating to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys dating from Ruth's time there (1902-1914) is exceedingly rare. Babe Ruth himself may have had a calendar exactly like this one hanging on his wall! We have never seen this calendar before and the fact that it remains in its original, unused state (none of the calendar sheets torn off) makes it all the more ideal for display. The calendar displays a hole at the top (as issued) for hanging on a wall. Minor surface wear, and a few small edge and corner tears, otherwise in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $593
