1930s Lou Gehrig Store-Model Left-Handed Fielder's Glove
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,185
Rare left-handed fielder's glove, manufactured by the Peerless Sporting Goods Co. (under the "Banner" brand name), featuring Gehrig's stamped facsimile signature at the base. Gehrig's stamped signature is clearly legible, but nearly all of the original silver-coloring has been worn away. The manufacturer's stampings in the pocket, including that of "Major League Model" are light, but legible. The model number above Gehrig's signature is partially legible and appears to begin "F8..." Not surprisingly, the majority of store-model Gehrig gloves that have survived today are first-baseman mitts. The fact that this not only a fielder's glove, but a left-handed example, makes it all the more rare and desirable in the eyes of most collectors. The glove displays moderate wear throughout, including a number of cracks to the leather along the base of the interior. The exterior leather is still supple and both the rear buckle and strap, as well as all of the original lacing, remain intact. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+.
