Extraordinary 1950s-1970s Yogi Berra Signed Yoo-Hoo Collection
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,422
The ultimate Yogi Berra Yoo-hoo collection! This amazing assemblage of Yoo-Hoo products and promotional pieces, spanning three decades (1950s, 1960s and 1970s), includes both familiar and seldom-seen items, all of which, ideally, have been signed by Berra. Yogi Berra's long-standing promotion of Yoo-Hoo is one of the most famous and successful of all player endorsements. Beginning in the 1950s and continuing over the next two decades, Berra was the company's chief spokesperson and wherever Yoo-Hoo was sold, one would usually find a likeness of Berra extolling the virtues of the chocolate drink. Of course, as a major investor in the company, Berra was only too happy to do his part in making Yoo-Hoo one of the top-selling refreshment beverages of the era. The collection is comprised of the following: 1) 1950s cardboard retail display, printed on heavy cardboard stock, picturing Berra, in uniform, sitting at his locker with a refreshing bottle of Yoo-Hoo in his hand. This piece dates to Berra's earliest association with the company and is one of the premier Yoo-Hoo/Berra display pieces in the hobby. Inscribed "Good Luck/Yogi Berra" in faded black marker (grading "6") on his image. A bottle cap from a vintage Yoo-Hoo bottle has been affixed to the center of the piece, directly above Berra's signature. It should be noted that this piece is complete with its original cardboard frame, which is rarely found with most examples today. The display (21 x 26.5 inches) exhibits only modest handling wear, including a few tiny edge tears along the cardboard frame, and is in Excellent condition. Mounted and framed (28 x 33 x 3 inches). 2) Vintage Yoo-Hoo retail clock/light display. Issued to retailers in promotion of Yoo-Hoo, this plastic wall fixture features an illustration of Berra in uniform at the plate alongside the Yoo-Hoo logo and a clock display. Signed "Yogi Berra #8 " in black marker (grading "10"). The piece is illuminated by means of an interior lightbulb. Both the light and clock are in working order; however, the second hand of the clock is bent and curled. This is a rare Berra Yoo-Hoo piece. The store display (29 x 12 x 3.5 inches) has moderate surface wear commensurate with its age and former use, but still presents beautifully. In Very Good to Excellent condition. 3) Vintage cardboard six-pack container complete with six empty bottles of Yoo-Hoo (two different label variations represented here). A different illustrated likeness of Berra (one batting and one catching) appears on either side of the container. Both the container and the front of one of the bottles have been signed by Berra in black marker (grading "10" and ""8," respectively). The container (9 x 6 x 8 inches) is in Good to Very Good condition, with a torn side panel and two torn compartment dividers, as well as other numerous small tears and creases. One of the bottles is chipped along the base, otherwise all are in Very Good to Excellent condition. 4) Vintage Yoo-Hoo cardboard carton. This carton once housed twenty-four 8.5-ounce cans of Yoo-Hoo. An illustrated likeness of Berra appears on each side panel. Signed by Berra on a side panel in blue marker ("9"). The carton (13.25 x 9 x 6 inches) is in Very Good condition overall, with a few tears along the edges and general wear. 5) Vintage Yoo-Hoo premium card picturing Berra in uniform as he sits at his locker enjoying a bottle of Yoo-Hoo. A facsimile signature of Berra appears in the lower right below the company's slogan "Me for Yoo-Hoo." Signed by Berra in blue ink ("10") atop his image. The card (3.5 x 5.5 inches) is in Very Good condition, with a number of moderate creases. 6) Plastic Yoo-Hoo cup. The cup features a portrait image of Berra, below which is his facsimile signature. A the large "Yoo-Hoo" name is featured on the reverse. Signed by Berra in black marker ("10") above his portrait. 5.25 inches high. In Excellent condition. 7) 1970s Yoo-Hoo advertising broadside. Printed on thin cardboard stock, the colorful sign pictures Berra as a member of the Mets extolling the virtues of Yoo-Hoo's "Big Energy Boost." Signed by Berra in blue Sharpie ("10"). The sign (11 x 17 inches) remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Total: 7 items. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
