1970 Jim Palmer Baltimore Orioles Salesman's Sample World Series Ring
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,659
1970 Jim Palmer Baltimore Orioles World Series ring issued as a salesman's sample by Jenkins Jewelry, which produced all of the 1970 World Series rings for the Orioles. This 10K gold ring was designed to replicate that awarded to Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer and was used by the company's salesmen to show prospective customers a sample of Jenkins' highest-quality work.
The intricately designed ring features an oval top containing a representation of Memorial Stadium, with a single faux diamond set in the center. The name "Orioles" is displayed below the stadium in raised, script letters. The lettering around the bezel reads "Baltimore Orioles World Champions." One shank reads "1970" above a Baltimore cap, which in turn is perched above a mitt holding a baseball. The Baltimore cap is crafted with orange and black enamel inlays. To the left running downwards, alongside all of this, is a ribbon that is inscribed "J. Palmer 22." The opposite shank features an eagle (representing the American League) holding a red, white, and blue enamel banner in its beak which reads "American League" in gold letters. The eagle's claws are clutching a circular shield, inlayed with blue enamel, that displays a ring of twelve gold stars around its perimeter. Inside the circular shield is a representation of a gold baseball, within which are the dates "1966" at the top, and "1969" at the bottom, and "1970 Champion"' across the center (representing the team's years as American League Champions). Engraved on the interior band is "Jenkins 10K" and the name "Jim Palmer." While this is obviously not the ring awarded to Jim Palmer, it is an exact replica of the one that Palmer received and is equal in its display value. As such, it offers collectors the next-best alternative to actually owning a player's ring, which are seldom made available by the players or their families. Near Mint condition. Size: approximately 10.5. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
