1921 New York Giants/Yankees World Series Press Pin
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $4,148
Extremely rare press pin issued for the 1921 World Series between the New York Yankees and New York Giants. Because both clubs called the Polo Grounds home in 1921, only one pin was issued for the Series. While this is an authentic 1921 World Series press pin, it is currently in the form of a charm and no longer features its original brooch back. The pin and its lower locking mechanism have been removed. The only original feature remaining on the reverse is the top mechanism that raised and lowered the pin. In place of the pin, a small clasp has been attached to the top mechanism through which a chain can be placed, allowing the press pin to be worn as part of a necklace or bracelet. The elegant center design features a gold baseball, crossed bats, and the date set against a white enamel background. "World Series Polo Grounds New York Press" is lettered in gold along the perimeter of the blue enamel border. The 1921 World Series press pin is one of the rarest press pins from the 1920s (or from any era). Despite the fact that this example has been modified into a charm, it remains an extraordinary example with regard to condition. Without reference to the modified reverse, the offered piece remains in Near Mint condition, displaying only slight wear along the base of the gold-colored border. Because the blue-and-white enamel front of this pin is so susceptible to wear, few high-grade examples have survived. This is one of them, albeit with a slightly altered reverse. Manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag; modified reverse. Approximately .75 inches in diameter. Near Mint condition. The only other example of this rarity we have offered in recent years appeared as Lot 1351 in REA's May 2011 auction; that example had its original pin clasp on reverse and sold for $7,638. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,148
