1909 E92-1 Dockman & Sons Complete SGC-Graded Set (40)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $11,850

Exceptionally attractive and very rarely seen complete set of E92-1 Dockman & Sons, all graded by SGC. The set includes eleven Hall of Famers, highlighted by two Honus Wagners (two different poses of Wagner are included in the set: throwing and batting), Christy Mathewson, Cy Young, and seven others. This is the first complete set of E92 Dockmans that we can recall ever offering. E92-1 Dockman & Sons is a very scarce caramel issue from 1909 that shares designs with several other closely related candy issues (Croft's Candy, Nadja Caramels, etc.) from the same era. All forty cards from the set have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. SGC Condition Report: One EX+ 70: Chase. Two EX 60: Bemis and Doyle (bat). Twenty-two VG/EX 50: Chief Bender (HOF), Bridwell, Casey, Frank Chance (HOF), Devlin, Donovan, Doolan, Dougherty, Gibson, Hughie Jennings (HOF), Magee, Christy Mathewson (HOF), John McGraw (HOF), McLean, Murphy, O'Hara, Schlei, Seigle, Shean (Nagy Collection), Joe Tinker (HOF), Honus Wagner/batting (HOF; Very striking card, with bold colors, even corner wear. Clean front and back, with no creases, and centered slightly to the right), and Cy Young (HOF). Eleven VG 40: Bergen, Doyle (throwing), Hartsel (Toy Town back), Kleinow, Nap Lajoie (HOF), Lobert, Miller, Schaefer, Schmidt, Honus Wagner/throwing (HOF; Bright and clean, with vibrant colors, and perfect centering), and Zimmerman. Three GOOD 30: Bescher, Davis, and Smith (Schmidt). One FAIR 20: Sam Crawford (HOF). This set is in exceptionally fine condition with most cards appearing far better than their technically accurate SGC-assigned grades. Caramel cards, because they were issued with candy, one card per package, did not easily escape damage or hold up well to wear over the years. Very substantial potential break value, especially due to the key Hall of Famers, including two poses of Honus Wagner. This is a tremendous and very rarely offered complete set of E92-1 Dockmans, one of the most popular, elusive, and colorful of all “E” card issues. Total: 40 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
