1961 Roger Maris "61 Homers in '61" Pin

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,252

One of the best of all Roger Maris pinbacks! It is also one of the most impressive of all baseball pins of the era for display. This is an extremely rare classic. We've only had one other example in all our years. This large-format pinback button (3.5 inches in diameter) commemorates his accomplishment of hitting sixty-one home runs in 1961. It is unclear if this pin was issued just before or just after Maris hit number 61. Another classic Maris pin of the era with the similar "61 in '61" slogan was issued to root Maris on. There was a Mantle "match" to that design confirming this. Because there is no Mantle match to this design, it is possible that it was produced immediately after he hit number 61, or only for Maris, very late in 1961 as a "cheering Maris on" pin as he approached the record. That would make the most sense to us and would suggest the pin may have only been available for sale at Yankee Stadium for a week or two at the end of the season, which would also be consistent with its great rarity. The pin features a large bust-length image of Maris as a member of the New York Yankees and reads, in both black and red lettering, "Roger Maris 61 Homers in '61." No manufacturer listed. The pin displays a few small stains and a few light scratches. The reverse is slightly tarnished. In Very Good condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $300++. SOLD FOR $2,252
