1950s Mickey Mantle Signed Rawlings Advertising Display
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $7,110
Colorful 1950s Rawlings die-cut retail display, with easel back, featuring Mickey Mantle in promotion of the company's line of "Mickey Mantle Baseball Gloves." The patriotic red, white, and blue design pictures Mantle in uniform, kneeling on one knee, with a Rawlings glove prominently displayed on his hand. Mantle has inscribed the piece "Best Wishes Mickey Mantle," in blue Sharpie (grading "10") atop his image. This is one of the premier Mantle advertising displays from the era and also one of the rarest. We know of only two others, with this piece representing the first we have ever offered. The original easel back remains intact and the piece can stand freely, as intended, if so desired. The size of this piece (27 x 21 inches; fully unfolded) probably made it extremely versatile for retailers, as it is suitable for either counter or floor display. The piece has benefitted from minor extremely professional restoration, including repair to a tear in the area of Mantle's neck and removal of tape residue on the reverse. The result is that the piece now presents almost exactly as it did when originally issued, with all of the colors remaining bold and vibrant. This is an outstanding museum-quality Mickey Mantle advertising display, that would be a worthy addition and significant highlight in even the most advanced collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate (open).
