1943 Philadelphia Athletics Game-Used Road Jersey
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $948
Philadelphia Athletics road jersey dating from the 1943 season. The gray flannel jersey features the letter “A” on the left breast and the number “1” on the reverse. All letters and numerals have been appliquéd in blue on white felt. Both a “Goldsmith” and “Mitchell & Ness” label appear on the interior right front tail. The size (“44”) and a portion of the year (“’4”) are chain-stitched in red on the left front tail. (The stitch outline of the numeral “3” is still visible to the right of the “’4.”) The “Stars and Stripes” patch (worn by all clubs in 1943) has been removed from the left sleeve (stitch outline clearly visible). The number “1” on the reverse is not original to the jersey, as the outline of a previous numeral (or possibly numerals) is clearly visible. While we are not positive, it appears that the former number could have been “9” (it might also have been either “49” or “41”). If so, than this jersey was worn by catcher Hal Wagner in 1943 (no official roster player or coach wore “41” or “49” with the A’s in 1943). Aside from the number change(s) on the reverse and the removal of the sleeve patch, the jersey displays no other alterations and is complete as issued. Moderate-to-heavy wear is displayed throughout, including a number of small stains on the front and reverse. 1940s-era A’s jerseys are scarce and this would make a fine representative example for any advanced collection. LOA from Troy Kinunen, Dave Bushing, and Dan Knoll/SCD Authentic. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
