1974 Reggie Jackson Oakland A's Signed Game-Used Alternate Jersey
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,740
Oakland A's alternate jersey worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Reggie Jackson in 1974. The gold knit jersey features the "A's" logo on the front and the number "9" on the reverse. The name "Jackson" is lettered on the reverse, directly above the number. Both the front logo and number are appliquéd in green on white tackle twill, while the name on the back is appliquéd in green tackle twill. Located on the front tail are a "McAuliffe" label, a "1974" year tag, a "42" size tag, and a laundry tag. Jackson has signed the jersey in black marker (grading "8") on the reverse, just to the left of the number. The jersey, which is original and unaltered, displays heavy wear, including some light tears to both the stitching and material of the letter "A" on the front logo. This particular jersey was worn by Oakland on occasion both at home and on the road in 1974. When used at home it was paired with white pants; on the road it was paired with gold pants. Oakland captured its third consecutive World Championship in 1974, with the World Series victory also marking the final championship season for the A's under the ownership of Charles Finley. Jackson was one of the mainstays of Oakland's championship run and the club's top slugger during that period. Jackson once again did his part in 1974, finishing the year with 29 home runs, 93 RBI, and a .289 batting average. Interestingly, we have never seen a Reggie Jackson Oakland A's jersey dating from either 1972 or 1973. Of the few known Reggie Jackson jerseys dating from 1974, this is the only alternate example we are aware of. The fact that it is also signed by Jackson only adds to its appeal. This jersey was authenticated by Dave Bushing and Dan Knoll in 2003, when they were both affiliated with Global Authentication, and is accompanied by an LOA bearing their names (as well as being reviewed again for this auction recently by renowned expert Dave Bushing). Reggie Jackson Oakland A's jerseys have always been highly prized by collectors, with the offered jersey representing both a rare and historically significant example dating from Oakland's fabled 1972-1974 World Championship dynasty. LOAs from Dave Bushing and Dan Knoll (Global Authentication), and James Spence/JSA.. The jersey has been framed to total dimensions of 33.5 x 41 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000+.
