1986 Cal Ripken Jr. Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,015

This Cal Ripken Jr. Louisville Slugger model "P72" transition-year bat was produced from 1985 Louisville Slugger bat stock, but actually shipped to Ripken in 1986. Factory records indicate that the only order of model "P72" bats ever shipped to Ripken during his playing career that are consistent with the specifications of the offered bat, occurred precisely on 2/17/86. Although shipped in 1986, the bat was actually produced from 1985 stock, as defined by the barrel stamping and the fact that Ripken's facsimile signature is foil-stamped on the barrel. The bat is not cracked and displays heavy use, including ball marks, deeply embedded stitch marks, rack and cleat marks, pine tar, and grain swelling. Ripken's uniform number ("8") is written on the knob in silver marker. Ripken, of course, played in all 162 games in 1986, finishing the year with 25 home runs, 81 RBI, and a .282 average. In addition to breaking Lou Gehrig's long-standing record for consecutive games played, Ripken also won two MVP Awards and is one of only a few players to total 400 or more home runs and 3,000 or more hits in his career. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2007. Length: 33.5 inches. Weight: 34.1 ounces. Graded A8.5 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 2 points for use, 1 point for the uniform number on the knob, and a half point for the pinpointed factory record). This is an exceptional Ripken pro-model bat in all respects, with only a few examples graded higher by MEARS. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,015
