Original Perez-Steele Hall of Fame Postcard Artwork - Roberto Clemente

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,925

Original watercolor-on-board painting of Roberto Clemente created by Dick Perez in 1981 for the Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcard set. Signed by the artist in the lower center. This is the preeminent Roberto Clemente artwork in the collecting world, universally recognized as a modern classic, and one of legendary Hall of Fame artist Dick Perez's most recognizable works. Given its significance, it is not surprising to learn that this is also the last original Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcard artwork to be released by the artist. Clemente has always had a special meaning for Dick Perez, both because of their shared Puerto Rican heritage, and as a personal hero on and off the field. In the past we have been asked on numerous occasions about the whereabouts of the Clemente Hall of Fame postcard artwork, which has never been offered or sold. We have always had to say, "That one is not available. It's a favorite of Dick Perez and it's hanging on his living room wall." Perez's admiration for Clemente is evident from the numerous paintings he made of the Hall of Fame outfielder over the years, eight of which are featured in his most recent book, The Immortals. Despite that prolific output, the offered artwork will always remain Perez's most definitive artistic expression of Clemente and one that will be remembered for generations to come. This is a particularly special and famous painting that is deserving of display and special prominence in either an advanced world-class collection or public institution. Artwork: 14 x 17 inches. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 20 x 23 inches. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,925
