1950 Jim Thorpe Signed Photo
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,015
Photograph signed by Jim Thorpe (1888-1953), Olympic gold-medal winner and the man considered by many to be the greatest athlete of the twentieth century. This is an ideal signed Thorpe piece because it pictures him in his prime as a member of the Canton Bull Dogs, where he achieved his greatest fame as a professional football player. The photo, which appears to be a second-generation print dry mounted onto a cardboard backing, is unique in that when the photo was reproduced, it was designed to have a small, rectangular white box in the lower right corner. Presumably, the box was placed there specifically for the placement of an autograph, as it offers much better contrast than the dark background. Regardless of its original purpose, Thorpe certainly took advantage of it by placing his blue-ink signature and the date ("Jim Thorpe/1950") within its confines. Above the white box he has added the personalization "To Marge/from." Both the personalization and signature are boldly scripted, grading "9." The photo (6.5 x 7.5 inches) displays a few tears along the right and top borders that have been ameliorated by the mounting process, as well as a small area of light adhesive residue in the upper left corner. In Very Good condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 13 x 14 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,015
