1952 Sugar Ray Robinson French Casino Nightclub Program - signed by Robinson, Jackie Robinson, and Others
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $593
In 1952 Sugar Ray Robinson traded his boxing gloves for tap shoes when he accepted an offer to host a revue at the French Casino, a nightclub located in the Hotel Paramount in New York City. Robinson, decked out in top hat and tails, was asked to dance a little and tell jokes as he introduced the various acts. While Robinson's performance was treated kindly by critics, the rigors of a nightly show were not to his liking and he quit the job after a month. Offered here is a rare program from Robinson's first foray into the entertainment field at the French Casino. The cover pictures a nattily attired Robinson and notes that he is "Making his THEATRICAL DEBUT in the spectacular FRENCH REVUE DIRECT FROM PARIS. It has been signed on the cover in blue ink by Sugar Ray Robinson ("9"), Jackie Robinson ("9") and Jersey Joe Walcott ("8"), all of whom were reported to be in the front-row audience on opening night, Henry Le Tang ("7"), Robinson's dance instructor, and one other individual (illegible). The program (6 x 9 inches) displays a vertical fold, and light staining throughout. In Very Good condition. It has been mounted (most likely by means of adhesive) and framed to total dimensions of 9.5 x 12.25 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $593
