1915 Hobey Baker Original News Photo

Spectacular original news photo picturing hockey legend Hobey Baker in 1915 as a member of the St. Nicholas Club, an amateur hockey team based in New York. The original Underwood & Underwood paper news caption, dated 12/16/15, that accompanies the photo gives a good sense of Baker's prowess: "Hobey Baker whose remarkable hockey playing astounded Canadian stars expected to repeat trick in second game of international hockey series Dec 18th. - Hobey Baker former captain of the Princeton football and hockey teams is expected to repeat his marvelous playing when the St. Nicholas team meets the Montreal All Star team in the second game of the International Hockey series Saturday Dec 18th. At the first game played in Montreal Dec 11th in which the St. Nicholas team won, Hobey astounded the Canadian stars by the marvelous game he played. If the St. Nicholas team (the Amateur Hockey League champs) win this game they will bring the Canadian trophy to this country. Hobey Baker was considered the greatest hockey player of his era. As noted in the caption, Baker was a standout at both football and hockey while attending Princeton. When he graduated, he continued playing hockey at the amateur level, but refused offers to play professionally. Baker later served as a fighter pilot in World War I. Unfortunately, he died in airplane crash in December, 1918 shortly before he was scheduled to return home. Baker was honored as one of the first twelve inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 (he was also the first American to be inducted) and in 1973 he was a member of the inaugural class in the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Today, the Hobey Baker Award is annually bestowed upon the best college hockey player in America. The photo (6.5 x 8.5 inches) displays numerous tiny surface creases (most of which can only be seen when viewed at certain angles) and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300.
