1787 George Washington Signed Potomac Navigation Company Document
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $6,518
One-page document, dated November 1, 1787, signed by George Washington (1732-1799), first President of the United States. Washington's signature, scripted "G. Washington" in black ink (grading "7") appears on a payment voucher of the Potomac Company, of which he was president. Also appearing on the voucher are the signatures of John Fitzgerald and James Gilpin as Company Directors. The document, which was initially dated October 26, 1787, records payment of six pounds eight shillings to Jacob Moore for services rendered to the company, which are dutifully enumerated to the left of Washington's signature. Moore signed and dated the voucher in receipt of payment on October 27, 1787, and it was eventually received and approved by Washington and the directors of the company on November 1, 1787. The Potomac Company was founded in 1785 with the goal of making the Potomac River navigable for commercial expansion to the west. Washington was the company's president as well as a major investor. This document dates from an extremely significant period in American history. Washington had just returned from Philadelphia in the fall of 1787, where he presided over the Constitutional Convention. While he participated little in the debates, his skillful leadership at the convention helped to finally produce the United States Constitution, which he and most of the other delegates then signed. Two years later, the Electoral College elected Washington as the first President of the United States. The document (7 x 9 inches), which is toned, displays both horizontal and vertical folds, as well a few minor border creases and tiny age spots. In Excellent condition overall. Matted and framed together with an engraved portrait of Washington to total dimensions of 23.5 x 15.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $6,518
