1853 Franklin Pierce Handwritten Letter as President and Franklin Pierce Free Frank (2)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $948
One-page handwritten letter, undated, signed by Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), fourteenth President of the United States. In this short letter, Pierce writes "To the Proprietors of The Republic, Washington, D.C." and cancels the company's government printing job. In full: "Gentlemen. I enclose herewith a copy of a letter this day sent to the Proprietor of the Union. If the public printing is being executed by you under a similar appointment, your authority will cease from this date. Very respectfully, Yr Obt Serv, Franklin Pierce." Both the text and signature have been scripted in black ink and grade "10." Although the letter is not dated, it was written on August 23, 1853, because that is the date of the accompanying "copy of a letter this day sent to the Proprietor of the Union" which is tipped in between the offered letter and a second blank sheet. As such, it dates from Pierce's first year in office. The copy letter, written by Pierce, but scripted and signed in the hand of a secretary, reads in part: "Under the law of March 3, 1845, authorizing the President...to select for the publication of proposals for contracts...one news paper without reference to its circulation. I have selected 'The Union'." The letter (7 x 9 inches) displays two vertical and three horizontal folds, as well as a small tear in the upper left corner. In Excellent condition overall. The copy letter (4.25 x 7 inches) also bears similar fold lines and is in Excellent condition as well. Included here is a Franklin Pierce free franked address panel from an envelope, signed in black ink ("9") by "Franklin Pierce" at the top and addressed in his hand. It is postmarked "Dover, NH, May 10." No year is listed. The free frank (4.5 x 2.25 inches) displays light adhesive residue on the front and reverse; otherwise in Excellent condition. Total: 2 items (Pierce handwritten letter and free frank). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $948
