1948 Ronald Reagan Signed Check

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,185

Rare bank check, dated November 30, 1948, signed by Ronald Reagan (1911-2004), fortieth President of the United States. The check, drawn on the Bank of America of Hollywood, California, is made out to "Mr. and Mrs. J. Neil Reagan" in the amount of $250, and has been signed by "Ronald Reagan" in blue ink (grading "10"). John Neil Reagan was Ronald Reagan's older brother, and both he and his wife have endorsed the check on the reverse. Reagan was strictly an actor at the time of this check and had yet to enter politics. Although he did not star in any films in 1948, he was president of the Screen Actors Guild, a position he held from 1947 through 1952, and then once more in 1959. He was also in the midst of a divorce from his first wife, Jane Wyman (she filed for divorce in 1947 and it was completed in 1948). Reagan, who was originally a Democrat before officially registering as a Republican in 1962, served as Governor of California from 1967 to1975 prior to being elected fortieth President of the United States in 1980. Early Reagan checks dating from his Hollywood career are scarce and this example, made out to his brother (thereby featuring two "Reagan" signatures) is especially desirable. The check (5.75 x 2.5 inches) displays a light vertical fold, normal bank cancellation stamps and perforations, and staple holes and a tiny tear in the upper left corner. In Excellent condition overall. Mounted (by means of photo corners) and framed together with a black-and-white photo of Reagan to total dimensions of 13.5 x 20 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,185
