"Cosa Nostra" Signature Collection (3): Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and Carlo Gambino
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,555
Collection of three items, a postcard and two checks, signed, respectively, by three infamous mob figures: Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and Carlo Gambino. Each of the signed pieces has been matted and framed together with a recent print of the respective signer, making for an attractive trio of wall displays. 1) Lucky Luciano (1897-1962). Italian postcard, from the "Gran Ristorante E Bar/'Da Giacomino'/Napoli," inscribed in black fountain pen "To/Mr. Cugat/a real nice/guy/Lucky Luciano." Both the text and signature grade "10." Presumably, this card was inscribed to famed bandleader Xavier Cugat. This card was almost certainly signed during the 1950s, following Luciano's deportation from the United States. The postcard (5.5 x 4 inches) is not addressed and has not been mailed. In Excellent condition. Total dimensions: 13.5 x 22 inches. 2) Meyer Lansky (1902-1983). Bank check, dated October 13, 1937, signed in black fountain pen (grading "10") by Meyer Lansky. The check, drawn on The National Shawmut Bank of Boston, is made out to the "State Tax Commission" in the amount of $956.89. Lansky was the money man for the mob and Luciano's right-hand man. The check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and perforations, and is in Excellent condition. Total dimensions: 13 x 16 inches. 3) Carlo Gambino (1902-1976). S.G.S. business check, dated December 4, 1963, signed in black ink by Carlo Gambino ("5") and Henry Saltzstein ("4"), Gambino's business partner. The check, drawn on The Chase Manhattan Bank of New York, is made out to "Federberg & Federberg" in the amount of $75. S.G.S. was a labor-relations company and one of the few actually registered in Gambino's name. Gambino was one of the most powerful mob leaders in history and boss of the crime family that bears his name. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays a light vertical fold, a few minor creases, and normal bank cancellation stamps and perforations. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Total dimensions: 14.75 x 18 inches. Total: 3 items (postcard and two checks, each in a framed display). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $3,555
