1960 Marilyn Monroe Signed Check
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,133
Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc., business check, dated August 15, 1960, signed by Marilyn Monroe. The check, drawn on the Colonial Trust Company of New York, is made out to “Paul A. Reilly & Co. Inc.” in the amount of $627.43 and is signed “Marilyn Monroe” in blue ink (grading “9”) along the base. A blue ink notation (not in Monroe’s hand) in the upper left corner reads “service 1/7 to 7/17.” At the time this check was written, Monroe was filming The Misfits, which was written specifically as a starring vehicle for her by her husband, Arthur Miller. Unfortunately, the breakup of her marriage, coupled with her increasing dependence on drugs and alcohol, caused director John Huston to suspend filming in August so that Monroe could be treated at a rehabilitation clinic. Ironically, The Misfits, which also starred an aging Clark Gable, was the last film for both screen legends. Gable died of a heart attack just days after the final scenes were filmed. Monroe, who had begun filming another picture in 1962 (Something’s Got To Give), mysteriously died in August of that year at the age of thirty-six. Only a very limited number of Marilyn Monroe checks exist. Almost all surfaced approximately thirteen years ago and this small supply has practically vanished into collections. Marilyn Monroe is one of the most forged of all celebrity signatures, giving these checks all the more special significance to collectors. This is an ideal Marilyn Monroe Productions check example signed by America’s most enduring sex symbol. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation marks, a tiny chip in the lower left corner, and a staple hole in the upper left. The original printed check number ("417") has been crossed out in blue ink and the number "429" is written above it. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,133
