1909-1911 E254 Colgan's Chips PSA-Graded Collection (81), Including Cobb and Wagner
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,333
The 1909-1911 E254 Colgan's Chips series are among the most unique and distinctive cards ever produced. The cards are actually circular (1-7/16 inches in diameter) and were issued as inserts with Colgan's Chips ("The Gum That's Round") in the round Colgan's Chips gum tins. Because they are so unusual and not traditional rectangular cards, E254s have been overlooked by many collectors, and represent one of the most outstanding values of all baseball candy issues. Offered is a substantial collection of eighty-one (79 different) E254 Colgan's Chips "Stars of the Diamond" cards highlighted by ten Hall of Famers, including Home Run Baker, Ty Cobb, Harry Hooper, Tris Speaker, Joe Tinker, and Honus Wagner. All of the cards (except four) are graded and encapsulated by PSA. Condition: The collection is comprised of seven MINT 9s, three NM-MT+ 8.5s, seven NM-MT 8s, one NM+ 7.5, nine NM 7s, one EX-MT+ 6.5, fourteen EX-MT 6s, eight EX 5s, sixteen VG-EX 4s, one VG+ 3.5, seven VG 3s, one GOOD+ 2.5, one GOOD 2, one PR 1, and four ungraded. The PSA grades are as follows: MINT 9: Abbaticchio, Ames, Criss, Jordan (Brooklyn), McLean, Orth (New York), and Parent. NM-MT+ 8.5: Abstein (Pittsburg), Hunter, and Leach. NM-MT 8: Bemis (Cleveland), Burch, Phillippe, Purtell (Chicago), Rucker, Snodgrass, and Stone. NM+ 7.5: Jones. NM 7: Birmingham, Bridwell, Engle, Gardner (Boston), Gaspar, Hartsel, Hartzell (St. Louis), McCormick (MC), and Wiltse. EX-MT+ 6.5: Becker. EX-MT 6: Baker (HOF), Bridwell, Camnitz, Devlin, Fromme, Getz, Hooper (HOF, Boston AL), Lange, Miller, Murphy, Paskert (Cincinnati), Seymour (New York), Spade (Cincinnati), and Unglaub (Washington). EX 5: Bush, Cobb (HOF), Dougherty, Hulswitt (St. Louis), Hummel, Knight, Lord (Boston), and Pfeister. VG-EX 4: Bailey, Beaumont (Boston), Berger (Cleveland), Demmitt (New York), Elberfeld (New York), Evans (horizontal letters), Evers (HOF), Hahn, Konetchy, McIntyre (Detroit), Moriarty, Mullin, Reilly (Chicago), Summers (white uniform), Wagner (HOF, curved letters), and Wilson. VG+ 3.5: Maddox. VG 3: Doyle, Flick (HOF, Cleveland), Milan, Reilly (Chicago), Schulte, Speaker (HOF), and Zimmerman (Chicago). GOOD+ 2.5: Donovan. GOOD 2: Bates (Philadelphia, black letters). PR 1: Mitchell. Ungraded: Clarke (HOF, Pittsburg, Gd), Collins (HOF, Vg), Davis (Phila., Nr/Mt), and Tinker (HOF, Gd). E254 Colgan's Chips are far rarer than most tobacco cards of the era, are one of the most interesting sets ever produced, and are one of the most overlooked of all vintage sets. In our opinion, they represent one of the best values of all 1910-era baseball issues. This is a very attractive collection of cards, including a few Hall of Famers (the set has very few HOFers), from this distinctive early gum issue. Total: 81 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++.
