1987 Charles Addams Original Cartoon Artwork
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851
Original Charles Addams (1912-1988) cartoon artwork, titled "A penny for your thoughts," signed by Addams in the lower left corner. This work, which originally appeared in the October 26, 1987, issue of The New Yorker, features an elderly professor and his wife sitting together in the living room. As he sits quietly, deep in the throes of a complex mathematical equation, his wife breaks the silence with her innocent inquiry, "a penny for your thoughts." This is one of the last cartoons ever created by Addams, as he died less than a year later from a heart attack, on September 29, 1988. As evidenced here, his skills as both a cartoonist and humorist were as sharp as ever, and he remained a master of his craft right up until the time of his passing. Medium: ink and wash en grisaille. Image Area: 13.5 x 9 inches. Publication history: Published in The New Yorker (October 26, 1987). Condition: There are a few light surface wrinkles in the lower left corner; otherwise in apparent Near Mint condition. Provenance: Purchased by our consignor in 1988 at Nicholls Gallery in New York for $2,500. The original Nicholls Gallery invoice accompanies the piece. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 21.5 x 19.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,851
