Charlie Chaplin Vintage Windup Toy Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,133

The popularity of Charlie Chaplin's "Little Tramp" character on the silver screen quickly gave rise to numerous toys featuring his likeness. Offered here are five classic examples dating from the early 1900s. 1-2) Two nearly identical Charlie Chaplin windup toys produced by German manufacturer Schuco in the 1920s. This toy, which features cloth clothing, was produced in two styles; one with a tin litho head and hat and the other with a flocked face and hat. Each style is represented here. Both are in working order and include the windup key. When wound, the doll spins and twirls its cane. The tin-litho head example is in Very Good to Excellent condition. The flocked-head example displays a number of small chips to the face and hat, and is in Very Good condition. Each stands 6.5 inches tall. Accompanied by a single, original box for one of the toys (2.75 x 6.75 x 2 inches). The lid features an illustration of Chaplin twirling his cane and is lettered "Made in Germany" in the lower right. Excellent condition. 3) Charlie Chaplin tin-litho windup toy. German made. Tin body with lead feet. Working order. Moderate-to-heavy use is displayed. Very Good condition. 8.5 inches tall. 4) Charlie Chaplin tin-litho dancer. Manufactured in Germany. Marked “DRGM” on one side and “WK” on other for Wilhelm Krauss. Charlie stands on a stage and can be made to dance by manually cranking the handle to the right. Very Good condition, with minor scratches and slight bending to the thin metal figure. 6.5 inches tall. 5) Charlie Chaplin tin dancer. Chaplin's figure is set in front of a tin box picturing a plantation-type setting. By winding the key on the reverse Chaplin is made to dance. "Made in USA" is lettered in the lower right. No manufacturer listed. Two small nails have been hammered into the front of the tin box, with one of the faces on the backdrop obscured by silver paint. Very Good condition. 5.5 x 7 x 1.5 inches. Also included in this collection is a plastic Chaplin figure with rotating arms. No manufacturer. Year unknown. Very Good condition. 6.5 inches tall. Total: 5 toys plus plastic figure. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,133
