1886 N167 Old Judge Benjamin Butler - SGC NM 84 - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $830
Graded NM 84 by SGC. Highest-graded example! Extraordinarily rare nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco card featuring Civil War general and politician Benjamin Butler. These N167 nonsport cards are very similar to the N167 Old Judge baseball series, with a vertical advertisement printed in blue on the reverse (as opposed to the horizontal back with dark-green printing used on the baseball series). The card is bright, crisp, and perfectly clean, with four sharp corners displaying just a hint of wear, and a flawless image. The reverse is also perfectly clean with bold blue text set against an off-white background. This is an extraordinarily high grade card for this set. It is an ideal nonsport sample card from one of the rarest and most significant of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues, and one that would sell for many tens of thousands of dollars if this were a baseball player from the same series. N167s are the earliest cards issued by Goodwin & Company. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $830
