"Horrors of War" is the most famous set of war-related trading cards ever issued, and one of the most popular and sought after of all nonsport cards sets. The set is unequaled in its colorful, detailed artwork and gruesome graphics. The reverse text, though historically factual, is filled with antifascist propaganda of the times. Historically significant and noteworthy, the "Horrors of War" set created an unprecedented stir when issued to children in the late 1930s, which still resonates with collectors to this day. "Horrors of War" was originally planned to be 240 cards, and was even sold in a 240-card set form. Later the additional forty-eight high-number cards (#241-288) were added to the set. The high-number series cards are particularly rare. This is an extraordinary high-grade complete set of this extremely popular 1930s nonsport issue. It is literally one of the finest and highest-grade complete sets ever assembled in the history of collecting! The total SMR value for the individual cards (not including the ten qualified cards and the one card graded GOOD 2) is $32,492 (there are no SMR values for the NM+ 7.5, EX-MT+ 6.5, EX+ 5.5, and VG-EX+ 4.5 grades, so the sixteen examples graded at these levels were calculated using the NM 7, EX-MT 6, EX 5, and VG-EX 4 values), and this does not begin to take into account the time and effort required to assemble a set in this grade. The set is accompanied by an original wrapper (Ex). Total: 288 cards plus wrapper. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000++. SOLD FOR $23,700
