1909-1911 T206 White Border Collection (306 cards, 42 HOFers)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $16,590

Collection of 306 assorted T206 White Borders (165 different). There is, of course, much duplication. This extremely substantial T206 collection is highlighted by an extremely impressive forty-two Hall of Famers (twenty-two different), among them Walter Johnson, Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. This is an original "childhood" collection that has remained untouched since assembled in 1910, and has been consigned directly by the daughter of the original owner. (Note: A partial set of 263 different cards offered as a separate lot in this auction were pulled from the entire collection; the 306 cards in this lot represent the duplicates.) Condition: 65% range from Vg to Vg-Ex (including a few Ex), 20% range from Gd to Gd-Vg, 15% are in lesser grades. While not in high grade, the cards in this collection are very attractive and presentable, in grades relatively affordable (compared to higher-grade examples) and thus very popular with collectors, with numerous highlights, and with the vast majority in a relatively narrow band of conditions. The forty-two Hall of Famers are graded individually as follows: Bender/trees (Vg/Vg-Ex), Brown/Cubs (Gd), Chance/red (Vg), three Chesbro (Vg-Ex and two Vg), two Clarke/bat (Ex and Gd-Vg), Collins/Phil. (Gd), four G. Davis (Vg-Ex, Vg, Gd, Fr), Evers/Cubs (Vg), Huggins/hands (Vg), two Huggins/port. (Vg-Ex and Vg), Jennings/port. (Vg-Ex), two Johnson/port. (both Vg), three Lajoie/throw (Vg and two Gd), five Marquard/hands (four Vg-Ex and Gd), three Marquard/port. (all Gd), McGinnity (Vg/Vg-Ex), three Speaker (two Vg and Fr), Tinker/hands on knees (Ex), two Waddell/throw (Vg and Fr), Waddell/port. (Vg), two Young/hand (Vg and Gd), and Young/port. (Vg). The backs are all Piedmont. A very impressive collection of circulated T206s with an extremely high concentration of Hall of Famers. This is an ideal collection to serve as the foundation for the assembling of an extremely attractive low- to medium-grade T206 set. Tremendous break-up value! Total: 306 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $16,590
