1909-1911 T206 White Border Collection (124 cards), Including Mathewson (2) and Johnson (2)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,703
Original-owner collection of 124 different T206 White Border cards, including twenty Hall of Famers, highlighted by two Christy Mathewson and two Walter Johnson. These cards were part of a very substantial, totally untouched collection of T206 tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots of the auction) that was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. All have Piedmont or Sweet Caporal backs. We have submitted four cards to SGC. Highlights: Bender/port. (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg), Brown/Cubs (Vg-Ex), Brown/port. (Vg), Brown/Wash. (Gd), Chase/pink (SGC VG 40), Clarke/port. (Vg), Crawford/bat (Vg), G. Davis (SGC VG 40), Huggins/hands at mouth (Gd), Jennings/both hands (Gd), Johnson/pitching (Gd), Johnson/port. (Gd), Kelley (Vg), Lajoie/port. (missing top border, otherwise Vg-Ex), Marquard/hands at side (Vg), Marquard/port. (Vg), Mathewson/port. (possible slight trim, otherwise Gd-Vg), Mathewson/white cap (SGC VG 40), McGinnity (Vg), Tinker/hands on knees (Vg), Waddell/port. (slight trim, otherwise Gd), and Wallace (SGC Authentic). The balance of cards grade 75% Vg to Vg-Ex and 25% range from Pr to Gd (includes a few slightly trimmed). While not technically a high-grade collection, most of these cards are extremely presentable. They are bright, clean, fresh, and overall very consistent in grade, with the vast majority of cards in a relatively narrow range of conditions. T206s perhaps more so than any other vintage issue are extremely popular in all grades. This is an ideal collection to serve as the foundation for the assembly of an extremely visually appealing low- to medium-grade complete set of T206, the most popular and classic set of the 1910 era. Total: 124 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $7,703
