1897 Cameo Pepsin Gum Jake Beckley Pin - Newly Discovered Example!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $6,518
Exceedingly rare, newly discovered Cameo Pepsin Gum pin of Hall of Fame first baseman Jake Beckley. This is the first Beckley Cameo Pepsin Gum pin we have ever seen and it may represent the only known example, since it does not appear in any of the published checklists, including the 2011 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. Incredibly, it was just recently discovered by a family of non collectors who found it while going through their grandmother's possessions (it was one of nine Cameo Pepsin gum pins found, all of which are offered on the internet-only portion of this auction). As most collectors are aware, due to the years in which he played in the majors (1888 to 1907), Beckley appears in very few card issues (he does appear in N172 Old Judge, W600 Sporting Life Cabinets, E107-1 Breisch-Williams, WG3 Fan Craze, and T206 White Borders). That fact, combined with this pin's possibly unique status, make it a particularly exciting Cameo Pepsin Gum checklist addition. It is interesting to note that Beckley is featured with the Reds on this pin (he joined Cincinnati in 1897). The pin is slightly toned and has a few small spots on the front, but displays exceptionally well with outstanding contrast. The reverse paper label is completely intact, displaying light wear. In Very Good condition overall. Manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag. Diameter: 1.25 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $6,518
