1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb - Green Background - Sovereign Back

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,252

Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. A very attractive and extremely conservatively graded example of this classic tobacco card of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, with the Sovereign Cigarettes back. Sovereign is a scarce back, certainly not in the same league as Drum or Uzit, but very unusual and seen far less often than the standard Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising backs. The Green Background portrait pose has long been considered the rarest of the four poses of Cobb in the T206 set. Cobb's portrait contrasts sharply against the bold green background. Flawless registration, no creases, clean both front and back, well centered a hint to the left (approximately 40/60), with light, even corner wear. The Sovereign reverse is perfectly clean with bold green print and with no tobacco stains. This is a tremendous example with much stronger eye-appeal than suggested by its PSA grade. (While virtually impossible to see, there are two very light spots of glue residue on the top corners of the green background, which are only visible by a hint of reflection when held at the right angle in extreme light. Apparently long ago, in the early days of card collecting, the card was glued face down on an album page to show the scarce Sovereign back. If PSA had not caught this hint of clear glue, we would have not seen it. This could not be more minor. The card is otherwise VG-EX.) This card heralds from a collection assembled in the 1970s that has not seen the light of day until now. This is a very strong and extremely attractive example of one of the key cards from the premier tobacco issue of the 1910 era. The SMR value for a PSA GOOD 2 Cobb green background (without reference to the Sovereign back) is $1,000. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
