1909-1911 T206 Christy Mathewson - Dark Cap - SGC NM+ 86
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,518
Graded NM+ 86 by SGC. One of just four graded at this level by SGC (out of an incredible 1,044 examples of all three poses graded in total to date), with only three T206 Mathewson examples ever graded higher! Stunning ultra high-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson (dark cap pose) from the T206 White Borders series, the most popular set of the era. In addition to being in very high grade (and very deservedly so; if this card was graded Nr/Mt-Mt we would not bat an eye), the offered example is all the more noteworthy as the reverse has an advertisement for Old Mill Cigarettes. Old Mill is a scarce back, certainly not in the same league as Drum or Uzit, but unusual and seen far less often than the standard Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising backs. The offered card is flawlessly crisp and clean, front and back, with four sharp corners (a hint of wear in the lower left is visible only from the reverse), snow-white borders, and perfect centering. Old Mill reverse is boldly printed. An exceptionally strong NM+ gem of this Hall of Fame pitcher that would enhance or upgrade virtually any high-grade set or collection. The equivalent SMR value is $3,750 (there is no SMR value for NM+ 7.5 grade, so we have referenced the NM 7 value). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $6,518
