1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb - Red Background - SGC NM 84
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $3,555
Graded NM 84 by SGC. Outstanding high-grade example of what is universally recognized as one of Cobb's most striking cards. This card was one of the condition highlights from a very substantial, totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction that was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. (These cards, which are presented in a total of ten lots in this auction, were actually consigned by the granddaughter of the gentleman who personally collected these cards in 1910!) The red background pose has long been considered one of the great classics of the T206 set, and of all vintage cards. This card has very strong eye-appeal. It has a particularly striking portrait, and brilliant colors with a vibrant red background. Extremely crisp and clean, both front and back, with four strong and square corners displaying just the slightest hint of wear (predominately the upper right corner). Centered toward the left border (approximately 30/70), with a very slight diamond cut. Sweet Caporal advertising on the reverse. An exceptionally attractive high-grade example of one of the key cards from the premier tobacco issue of the 1910 era. This T206 Cobb red background portrait would make a significant addition or upgrade to virtually any world-class T206, vintage Hall of Famer, or Ty Cobb card collection. The equivalent SMR value is $4,950. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+.
