1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel Eddie Plank
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,659
Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. E95 Philadelphia Caramel of Hall of Fame pitcher Eddie Plank of the Philadelphia Athletics. This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of Plank's most classic cards. Plank is one of the keys to this scarce caramel-card set issued in 1909 by the Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey. This example of Plank has a far superior appearance than suggested by its technically accurate EX+ grade. It has been downgraded from an even higher level due to its 25/75 left-to-right centering (and this type of centering is not uncommon with E95s). The card is bright and crisp, with vibrant colors, just the slightest hint of wear to the square corners, and a boldly printed checklist for the set on the back (centered to the right). This card is all the more noteworthy as the portrait image on this card is based on the very same image used to produce the rare Plank card in the T206 White Border series. An extremely crisp and attractive high-grade example of one of Plank's most striking cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659
