1887 N284 Buchner Gold Coin Tobacco Hall of Famer SGC-Graded Collection (5)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,259
Outstanding collection of five N284 Buchner Gold Coin cards, comprised of four Hall of Famers plus legendary St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von Der Ahe, each graded by SGC: 1) Buck Ewing/hands at neck (VG/EX 50); 2) Tim Keefe/ball in hand (VG/EX 50); 3) "Old Hoss" Radbourn/hands above waist (EX 60); 4) Chris Von Der Ahe (VG 40), and 5) John Ward/hands by knee (VG/EX 50). Buchners are unusual in that they feature generic illustrations of the ballplayers rather than the actual likeness of the identified player. Chris Von Der Ahe, however, is of special note as he is the only subject in the entire set to be honored with an actual portrait likeness, and this (along with his great prominence as the owner and president of the World Champion "Brownie Champs") makes this card one of the most interesting of all nineteenth-century cards and one of the most important cards in the N284 Buchner set. This is an extremely attractive and substantial representative collection unto itself of key cards, including four major Hall of Famers and one owner, from the Buchner Tobacco set, one of the few full-color baseball-card sets of the nineteenth century, and one of the most artistically interesting, distinctive, and classic baseball-card sets of the 1880s. Total: 5 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,259
