1933 R333 DeLong Gum Near-Complete Set (18/24), Including Gehrig
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778
Near-complete set of 1933 DeLong Gum comprised of eighteen different of the twenty-four cards in the set, including examples of key cards Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx. DeLongs have always held a special place in the hearts of collectors. The small size of the set, its relative rarity compared to most others card sets of the era, its unique dimensions and design, and its status as a “one-year issue” all combine to make DeLongs one of the most highly regarded of all 1930s issues among serious collectors. The Gehrig in particular has long been recognized as one of the most highly prized of all Gehrig and all 1930s cards. Six cards are graded by PSA (2) or SGC (4). The near-set (18 of 24 cards) is comprised of the following: #1 McManus (Vg), 3 (Pr), 4 Terry (Fr), 5 Gehringer (Gd), 7 Gehrig (SGC POOR 10), 8 Cuyler (Pr), 9 (Vg), 10 O'Doul (SGC FAIR 20), 11 Lindstrom (Fr), 13 Maranville (Fr), 14 Gomez (SGC VG 40; beautiful card, looks far nicer!), 15 (Fr-Gd), 17 Martin (PSA VG-EX 4), 18 (Fr-Gd), 20 (Fr), 21 Foxx (SGC POOR 10), 22 Klein (Fr-Gd), and 23 Grove (PSA PR 1). Missing only the following six cards for completion: #2 Simmons, 6 Cochrane, 12 Traynor, 16 Warneke, 19 Hafey, and 24 Goslin. As can easily be seen, many of these cards have a stronger appearance than their technically accurate assigned grades. This is a very attractive group, including a total of ten Hall of Famers, and missing only six cards for the completion of a very pleasing low- to mid-grade set of these 1930s classics. The equivalent SMR value for just the six graded cards (not including the twelve ungraded cards) is $953. Total: 18 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
